What We’re Looking For in Contributors

We seek enthusiastic storytellers who can transport readers to the heart of African travel adventures. The types of content we gladly accept include:

  • Destination Guides: In-depth guides to cities, national parks, or hidden gems across Africa, complete with tips on where to go, when to visit, and what to experience.

  • Cultural Insights: Articles exploring African heritage, traditions, festivals, music, art, and local customs. For example, you might write about the vibrancy of Lagos nightlife, the significance of a Maasai ceremony, or the history of ancient sites like Great Zimbabwe.

  • Personal Travel Essays: First-person narratives that share a meaningful journey or eye-opening experience. Whether you volunteered in a Kenyan village, traced your roots in Ghana, or trekked through the Congolese rainforests, we want heartfelt stories that resonate.

  • Travel Tips & Itineraries: Practical advice for fellow travelers such as budget travel hacks in Africa, a two-week itinerary through East Africa, safety tips for solo travelers, or culinary trails for foodies exploring African cuisines.
All submissions must relate to Africa – our focus is exclusively on travel in Alkebulan. We love pieces that showcase lesser-known destinations, break stereotypes, and celebrate the diversity of the continent. If you’re unsure whether your idea fits, feel free to reach out and ask!

Contributor Guidelines and Editorial Tone

To maintain high quality and authenticity on our site, please follow these guidelines when writing for us:

  • Originality: We only publish original content that hasn’t been published elsewhere (including your own blog). Your story should reflect your personal experience or well-researched insights, not copied text. Plagiarism or AI-generated text is not accepted.

  • Authentic Voice: Write in a warm, engaging tone as if you’re sharing travel advice with a friend. We value storytelling that is honest, personable, and culturally respectful. Avoid overly promotional language – our readers appreciate genuine perspectives and relatable narratives.

  • Quality and Clarity: Submissions should be well-written and free of spelling or grammatical errors. Please proofread your work or have someone review it before submission. Use clear language and explain local terms or phrases that might not be known to a global audience.

  • Length and Format: We recommend articles to be 1200–2,000 words for comprehensive topics (with a minimum of ~1000 words). For photo essays, see our separate guidelines on the Submit Photo Essays page. Break up your article with headings, subheadings, and short paragraphs (2-4 sentences) to enhance readability. Bullet points or numbered lists are welcome for tips, dos and don’ts, etc.

  • Images (Optional): We encourage you to include photographs from your travels in Africa to complement your writing. Only use images you own or have rights to. Include captions and credits for each image. (If you don’t have images, our editorial team may add relevant visuals.)

  • Citations and Links: If you mention specific facts or figures, please cite sources or include a hyperlink for credibility. You may include a couple of relevant external links (e.g., to a museum’s official site or an eco-lodge you recommend). Additionally, feel free to link to any related articles on Travel to Alkebulan for context (check our site for topics that overlap with yours). We do not allow affiliate or promotional links in guest submissions. For promotions check our advertise page for guidelines.

How to Pitch or Submit Your Story

Our submission process is straightforward and collaborative:

  1. Pitch Your Idea: Send us a brief pitch via email – a few sentences about your story idea or outline. Email your pitch to info@traveltoalkebulan.com with the subject line “Write for Us Pitch – [Your Proposed Title]”. Introduce yourself in a line or two and tell us what you’d like to write about and why it’s a great fit for Travel to Alkebulan.

  2. Wait for Approval: Our editorial team will review your pitch and respond within about one week. We might give you the go-ahead, suggest a different angle, or in some cases, decline if the topic isn’t the right fit (or already covered). Feel free to follow up if you haven’t heard back in 7-10 days.

  3. Write Your Article: Once your pitch is approved, it’s time to write! Craft your article following our guidelines above. Ensure it meets our quality standards and truly shines a light on the African travel experience you’re covering.

  4. Submit the Draft: Email your completed draft as a Google Doc link or Word document to our editors (same email as above). If you have photos, you can attach a few low-resolution images to the email for review (we’ll request high-res versions later if we accept the piece). Include a proposed title and a 1-2 sentence author bio with any personal blog or social media link you’d like us to feature.

  5. Review and Edits: Our team will review your submission for content and clarity. We may suggest edits or ask you to clarify certain points. Don’t worry – this is a collaborative process aimed at polishing your work while preserving your voice. We’ll work with you on any revisions.

  6. Publication: After final edits, we’ll schedule your article for publication on Travel to Alkebulan. We’ll notify you of the expected publish date. Once live, we’ll send you the link and promote the article on our social media channels. (We encourage you to share it too!)

Throughout this process, we strive to maintain open communication. If you have any questions or need guidance, you can always reach out to us for support.
